Lionhead goldfish
Developed headgrowth, no dorsal fin and a relatively flat back
Chinese/British lionheads have developed headgrowth, a clean dorsal-finless back and a flatter rear outline than ranchu. Regional Chinese trade labels can overlap; check the English form name and dorsal fin together.
- Length and basis
- 48 cm TL
- Reference temperature
- Unknown
- Captive lifespan
- The breeder account reports an average of 7–8 years in southwest Britain with mild winters; it is not a controlled universal average.
- pH
- 7–8.4 (source care reference)
- Hardness
- Unknown
Monitor feeding access around headgrowth and avoid sharp decor. Experience from mild southwest-British winters is not an all-climate overwintering plan. Swimming and feeding ability vary among forms. A shared species name or overlapping temperatures does not establish compatibility. Provide filtration, oxygenation and maintenance.
Appearance and identification
Both lionheads and ranchu lack a dorsal fin, but lionheads have a flatter rear back and ranchu a more pronounced downward curve toward the tail.
Same-species behaviour
Assess individual swimming and feeding; a group size suitable for every form remains unknown.
Space requirements
A dimensioned adult housing plan remains unverified. Avoid small, unfiltered containers.
Diet and feeding
Use an appropriate goldfish diet with suitable varied foods, adjusting to condition and water quality.
Compatibility limits
Active single-tailed fish may outcompete slower double-tailed forms. Avoid fin nippers and overly competitive companions.
Aquarium environment
Goldfish may eat or uproot plants; aquarium illustrations do not establish plant safety.
