Emperor snakehead
A tail-base ocellus and irregular flank patches on a large predator
A robust elongated body often carries an orange-rimmed dark ocellus on the upper tail base. Golden-brown or darker flanks may show irregular patches with pale edges on some scales.
- Adult length
- Up to 27 cm
- Water temperature
- 22–30 °C
- Natural habitat
- Inhabits swamp-forest waters.
Reaches 65 cm. A 12–15 cm fish on sale needs a permanent plan for a large adult before purchase.
Appearance and identification
A river-and-lake fish of Southeast Asia that varies with origin and growth. Compare the ocellus and pale-edged flank patches with C. melanoptera; markings may weaken with age. Highly saturated red trade photographs are not typical colour.
Adult space
Allow generous turning, swimming and maintenance space, substantial cover, a secure lid and surface access. The size on sale does not show permanent needs.
Diet and feeding
A fish-eating predator. Offer suitable animal foods and check that they are taken. Tameness toward the keeper does not make it an omnivore.
Same-species behaviour
Relatively peaceful with some fish too large to swallow, but pairing or grouping is not assured; watch for chasing and food access and be ready to separate fish.
Compatibility limits
Being too large to swallow is only one factor. Injury, competition and adult space matter; small fish and shrimp are at risk.
Aquarium environment
Plants can provide cover if they do not block turning or access to the surface.
