Assamese snakehead
Fine dark spotting and blue-grey long fins, with short pelvic fins
The elongated grey-brown body has distinct small dark spots. Dorsal and anal fins can show blue-grey reflections. A blunt broad head and short pelvic fins complete the look.
- Adult length
- Up to 29.7 cm
- Water temperature
- 16–25 °C
- Natural habitat
- Found in both flowing and standing water, including streams and ponds.
Temperature is seasonal, from 15–30°C, not constant year-round.
Appearance and identification
Described from Assam in 1867. Compare its mainly dark spotting with the orange markings often seen in C. pulchra. Old labels need care, as another species was mixed into the old type series.
Adult space
Provide cover, surface access and a secure lid with humid air above the water. Air breathing does not replace filtration or water changes. Check stock origin and seasonal needs.
Diet and feeding
Takes insects, worms and coarse frozen foods; some fish accept food sticks after habituation. Match food size to the fish.
Same-species behaviour
Watch territory, food access and prolonged hiding, and be ready to separate fish.
Compatibility limits
Larger companions can still be attacked. Shrimp and small fish are at risk.
Aquarium environment
Plants and wood may offer shelter. Do not count on it for algae control.
