Sailfin tetra
Males spread red-and-yellow sails with a patterned anal fin
Mature males have enlarged dorsal and anal fins with coloured ornamentation. The body is brownish with a dark mark at the tail base. Females have smaller fins, and even males do not display continuously.
- Adult length
- Up to 7 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 20–28 °C
- pH
- 4–6.5
- Hardness
- 1–5 dGH
- Natural habitat
- Occurs in rivers and streams.
Not a conventional tightly schooling tetra. Males occupy caves and defend territories. Very small fish can be eaten; provide retreats and quiet access to food. After spawning, the male alone guards the eggs and brood and drives the female out of the cave.
Appearance and identification
Compared with Poecilocharax weitzmani, this species has a small adipose fin and a distinct caudal-peduncle blotch; the other fish has a prominent dark lateral band and blue scale spots.
Same-species behaviour
Breeding males occupy caves and provide parental care. Additional males need space and retreat areas.
Space requirements
Use a 75 × 30 cm footprint with wood, leaf litter and caves that interrupt sightlines. Keep water mature and stable, light subdued and flow gentle.
Diet and feeding
Offer suitably sized live and frozen foods and watch each fish. Some may learn to accept dry foods; newly imported fish may not.
Compatibility limits
A quiet disposition does not make very small tankmates safe from its large mouth. Avoid aggressive feeding competition.
Aquarium environment
Provide shaded retreats, caves, broken sightlines and gentle flow in a mature aquarium. Males do not keep their enlarged fins spread continuously.
