Silvertip tetra
Copper-gold body, white fin tips and a dark tail marking
Males are copper-coloured; females and juveniles are usually paler. Look for the white fin tips and short dark tail marking; there is no adipose fin behind the dorsal fin.
- Adult length
- Up to 5 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 23–28 °C
- pH
- 6–8
- Hardness
- 5–20 dGH
- Natural habitat
- Native to the São Francisco basin in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
An active fish that needs swimming room. Solitary individuals may nip fins; keeping a group can reduce this without eliminating the risk.
Appearance and identification
Compared with the orange-red ember tetra, check the pale fin tips and dark tail marking. Sex and maturity affect the strength of the copper colour. It lacks an adipose fin.
Same-species behaviour
Keep at least six, preferably ten or more.
Space requirements
Use at least a 60 × 38 × 30 cm aquarium for a small group, with a swimming lane.
Diet and feeding
Offer appropriately sized flakes or granules with small live or frozen foods.
Compatibility limits
Watch for chasing and fin nipping, especially around slow, long-finned companions.
Aquarium environment
Keep planted shelter alongside open swimming space.
