Appearance and identification

A black neon tetra lacks the same prominent red stripe. Other three-striped Hyphessobrycon can be much closer lookalikes, so inspect the shoulder marking and body pattern together. The black band widens immediately behind the gill cover towards the pectoral-fin tips and continues into the tail fin. Frightened fish may show little black.

Same-species behaviour

Keep eight to ten or more.

Space requirements

Allow a footprint of at least 60 × 30 cm, with swimming room around plants and wood.

Diet and feeding

Offer suitably small dry foods supplemented with small live or frozen foods.

Compatibility limits

Assess companions by size, activity and feeding competition.

Aquarium environment

Planting or a sand-and-wood layout can provide cover. Keep an open swimming route.
