Reed tetra — AI-generated side-view illustration

Reed tetra

Hyphessobrycon elachys

Silver body, a dark tail-base mark and elongated male fin rays

Mature males combine a dark caudal marking with elongated dorsal and pelvic rays and a broad front lobe of the anal fin. Females do not show the same fin development.

Adult length
Up to 2 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
Water temperature
24–27 °C
pH
6–7.2
Natural habitat
Native to the Paraguay River basin.

Check that tiny fish can take the offered food and avoid fin-nipping companions. Small size does not remove the need for stable water and swimming space.

Appearance and identification

Compare it with the golden Kitty tetra: the reed tetra is silvery, lacks the transverse chevron markings and has a broader male anal-fin lobe. Another lookalike, H. loweae, is golden in life and its mature males lack this species' broad anal-fin lobe. Compare colour and mature male fin shape together; do not apply male features to females or juveniles.

Same-species behaviour

Keep at least ten.

Space requirements

Allow at least 60 cm of tank length, with open swimming space between cover; protect filter intakes.

Diet and feeding

Use appropriately small live, frozen and dry foods; observe actual feeding.

Compatibility limits

Assess size and feeding competition.

Aquarium environment

Planting can provide cover without blocking the swimming route. Protect small fish from filter suction.
