Appearance and identification

The serpae tetra usually shows one conspicuous shoulder patch, whereas the flame tetra has two vertical marks. Males can be more colourful with dark tips on the pelvic and anal fins. Use several features together. Mature males have small bony hooks on the anal and pelvic fins that females lack.

Same-species behaviour

Keep eight to ten or more in a mixed-sex group. Males may compete for position within the group.

Space requirements

Allow at least a 60 × 30 cm footprint, with open swimming room around planting.

Diet and feeding

Offer appropriately sized dry foods with small live or frozen foods for variety.

Compatibility limits

Consider the activity and feeding competition of each companion.

Aquarium environment

Provide areas of shelter and subdued light.
