Appearance and identification

Compare its two shoulder blotches with the single blotch of H. notidanos and the Kitty tetra, H. heliacus. In mature male procyon the pelvic fins are extended but not threadlike; male Kitty tetras have filamentous pelvic fins. Procyon also lacks conspicuous chevron-shaped side markings, or shows them only faintly. Long dorsal fins or yellow coloration alone are not enough for identification.

Same-species behaviour

Keep ten or more, including two males. Observe rivalry.

Space requirements

Allow a tank 80 cm or more long. Provide retreats, swimming space and stable water.

Diet and feeding

Offer small flakes, granules and frozen or live foods; check access for each fish.

Compatibility limits

Assess size, feeding intensity and fin-nipping.

Aquarium environment

Provide cover and open water.
