Diamond tetra
Reflective scales and pale violet fins in mature males
The diamond-like reflections become more noticeable as the fish matures. Males develop longer dorsal, pelvic and anal fins; females generally have clearer fins.
- Adult length
- Up to 6 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 24–28 °C
- pH
- 5.5–7
- Hardness
- 5–12 dGH
Plan for adult size. Too few companions can leave the fish timid or increase fin nipping.
Appearance and identification
Compare the outline with the Congo tetra, another fish with conspicuous adult male iridescence and long fins. The diamond tetra lacks the Congo male’s extended central tail. This link is for visual exploration, not a claim of shared genus or compatibility.
Same-species behaviour
The source recommends a group of at least six to eight. Monitor competition and the condition of individuals being chased.
Space requirements
The source gives a 60 × 38 cm footprint for a small group. Plan for adult swimming space and shelter rather than juvenile size; this reference does not establish a fixed stocking number.
Diet and feeding
Offer suitably sized prepared foods with small frozen or live foods.
Compatibility limits
Assess adult size, activity and fin-nipping risk. Ornamental shrimp compatibility has not been verified.
Aquarium environment
Plants can provide shade and shelter; avoid an entirely bright, bare aquarium. Persistent tight schooling and plant damage are unverified.
