Green neon tetra
A long blue-green stripe and little red
The bright stripe reaches the tail base. In neon and cardinal tetras it ends farther forward, near the adipose fin.
- Adult length
- Up to 2.5 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 24–27 °C
- pH
- 3–6.5
- Hardness
- 1–8 dGH
- Natural habitat
- Native to the upper Negro and Orinoco river basins.
Use a mature, stable aquarium. Avoid extreme pH adjustments.
Appearance and identification
Compare the amount of red as well: the cardinal has a much more extensive red flank.
Same-species behaviour
Keep at least 8–10 together; they may not school tightly all the time.
Space requirements
At least 45 × 30 cm. Provide cover and make sure these small fish can reach food.
Diet and feeding
Provide tiny dry foods and small live or frozen foods; check that small-mouthed individuals get enough.
Compatibility limits
Avoid larger, forceful competitors.
Aquarium environment
Plants can offer cover, but stable water and gentle maintenance matter more than layout alone.
