Golden Dwarf Barb
Black fin-base patches and a caudal band on a yellow fish that needs gentle, stable water.
Ordinary adults have pale yellow-silver bodies, a broad tail-peduncle band and dark bases on yellow dorsal and lower fins. Flank smudges can be faint.
- Adult length
- Up to 4 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 18–24 °C
- Lifespan
- 4–6 years
- pH
- 6–7
- Hardness
- 1–10 dGH
- Natural habitat
- Inhabits slow waters and river margins over mud or silt, often shallow streams through farmland, sometimes with turbid water.
Use a biologically mature stable aquarium and avoid strong current. Thin newly imported fish may need feeding without competitors; tiny size does not justify an immature miniature tank.
Appearance and identification
P. gelius, P. canius and P. aurea are separate species; a golden-dwarf trade label alone does not identify them.
Same-species behaviour
Groups reduce shyness but may not school tightly.
Space requirements
A 60 × 30 cm base and at least 8–10 fish, with gentle flow, plant cover and accessible feeding space.
Diet and feeding
Combine suitably tiny prepared foods with small live or frozen prey; monitor condition and actual feeding.
Compatibility limits
Prefer a species tank or very small quiet companions.
Aquarium environment
Dense plants, floating cover and roots provide shade; keep mature filtration and gentle movement.
