Up to 5 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
Water temperature
20–27 °C
Lifespan
4–7 years
pH
6–8
Hardness
2–20 dGH
Natural habitat
Inhabits shaded, shallow, slow streams over silt and fallen leaves.

Care for farmed fish may not suit wild stock. Colour strength alone identifies neither strain nor health.

Appearance and identification

Formerly known as Puntius titteya.

Same-species behaviour

Groups can reduce shyness and encourage male displays. Sex and condition affect appearance; continuous tight schooling is not assured.

Space requirements

Allow a 60 × 30 cm base for 6–10 fish. Combine adult space, plant cover and open lanes.

Diet and feeding

Offer varied small prepared, live or frozen foods and plant content; check individual access to food.

Compatibility limits

Choose peaceful companions of suitable size and activity.

Aquarium environment

Plants, floating cover, roots and leaf litter offer shelter.
