Tucano tetra
A tiny translucent golden fish with a broad dark lateral band
Adults are pale golden and translucent, with a broad dark band running from behind the gill cover towards the tail base. The gill region shows reddish translucence and the upper eye may have a bluish sheen.
- Adult length
- Up to 1.7 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 20–28 °C
- pH
- 4–6.5
- Hardness
- 1–8 dGH
- Natural habitat
- Native to the Uaupés River system in the upper Negro basin.
Small size does not mean easy care. Provide mature stable water, tiny food and cover.
Appearance and identification
Juveniles show a blue-green stripe that fades as they grow. Red fins alone should not determine sex.
Same-species behaviour
Keep eight to ten or more conspecifics. Breeding males can defend territories and need retreat options.
Space requirements
Allow at least a 45 × 30 cm footprint with wood and shaded plant cover.
Diet and feeding
Offer tiny live, frozen or suitably sized dry foods and check actual intake. Fry need much smaller first foods.
Compatibility limits
Avoid fish able to swallow them or dominate feeding.
Aquarium environment
Use shade-tolerant plants and wood for cover. A brightly lit aquarium without refuges is not appropriate.
