Appearance and identification

The male has broad flank bands and modest dorsal/anal extensions, without the female’s copper-orange belly colour. Pink, long-fin and marbled forms are the same species.

Social behaviour and territory

Watch actual pair behaviour; a random male and female may not form a stable pair.

Compatibility limits

Territorial aggression is a major limit; modest size does not mean gentleness.

Space requirements

A 90 × 30 cm base suits one pair; multiple pairs or companions need substantially more space.

Aquarium environment

Digging may uproot plants. Secure rocks, caves and plants while keeping open areas.

Diet and feeding

Use varied complete foods and check each fish feeds. Brood care or bottom picking does not replace feeding.
