Bloodfin tetra
A silver-blue body with red pelvic, anal and tail fins
The red fins stand out against the slender silver body.
- Adult length
- Up to 5.5 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 18–28 °C
- pH
- 6–8
- Hardness
- 3–25 dGH
- Native range
- Native to the Paraná River basin, usually occupying upper and middle water layers.
- Natural habitat
- Unknown
Use a tightly fitting lid: it can jump. It may nip slow-moving or long-finned companions.
Appearance and identification
Compared with the glass bloodfin, the body is more robust and the pelvic and anal fins also contain red. Mature males develop small hooks on some fin rays.
Same-species behaviour
Keep at least six of its own species. A group does not mean constant coordinated schooling.
Space requirements
A 60 × 30 cm footprint suits a small group. Leave open swimming areas among planted cover and use a tightly fitting lid because the fish may jump.
Diet and feeding
It accepts prepared, frozen and live foods; vary the diet with appropriately sized items.
Compatibility limits
Be cautious with slow or long-finned companions.
Aquarium environment
Provide planted shelter and open swimming room, with some floating cover if appropriate.
