Glass bloodfin tetra
A translucent slender body with red at the tail
The glasslike body and slightly upturned mouth suit an upper-water fish. The pelvic and anal fins lack the red seen in some bloodfin lookalikes.
- Adult length
- Up to 6 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 23–27 °C
- pH
- 6–7.5
- Natural habitat
- Native to the Amazon River basin.
Leave open upper-water swimming space and avoid stronger, larger surface-feeding competitors.
Appearance and identification
Compare the translucent trunk and clear pelvic and anal fins with Aphyocharax anisitsi, whose fins also show red. Mature females can be fuller-bodied. Both sexes have a white anal-fin seam. A male in good condition may show a dark stripe beside it; the white seam alone does not identify a male.
Same-species behaviour
Keep at least six to eight. Males may dispute with one another.
Space requirements
A 60 × 38 cm footprint is only just suitable for a small group. Decoration must leave sufficient open water.
Diet and feeding
Offer varied dry foods and small live or frozen foods.
Compatibility limits
Check access to surface food and the size and activity of companions.
Aquarium environment
Use some floating cover while keeping open water. Newly introduced fish may be nervous.
