Appearance and identification

The name australe means southern, not Australian. The species comes from coastal Gabon and Congo. Gold, orange, chocolate and albino labels describe forms of one species.

Same-species behaviour

A trio suits breeding; it is not a schooling fish. Provide escape cover for females.

Space requirements

At least a 45×25 cm base for a pair or trio.

Diet and feeding

Offer varied, suitably small live or frozen animal foods. Some fish accept flakes.

Compatibility limits

Consider body size, pursuit and feeding competition.

Aquarium environment

Use plants and floating cover to break sightlines while keeping feeding access.
