Eyespot badis
A pale-ringed tail-root eyespot and fine male spotting
A relatively deep body carries a dark, pale-edged mark at the caudal-fin base. Displaying males may show a golden-brown body, fine dark spots and orange-brown fins; stress changes the pattern.
- Adult length
- About 2.5 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 20–24 °C
- pH
- 6.5–7.5
- Hardness
- 1–5 dGH
- Natural habitat
- Recorded from a clear stream with moderate flow, sand and pebbles, grassy banks and clumps of submerged Cryptocoryne.
Males defend territories and caves. This is not a schooling fish.
Appearance and identification
Compared with the similarly eye-spotted Badis pyema, this species is deeper-bodied and darker.
Social behaviour and territory
Separate cave entrances and break sight lines. Persistent chasing or missed meals calls for separation.
Compatibility limits
Feeding competition and predation on young shrimp are concerns.
Space requirements
60 × 30 cm for a pair or small group. Multiple males need more space and separate cover. Keep it at 20–24°C long term.
Aquarium environment
Plants and wood can screen territories, but caves still need good spacing. Keep feeding observable.
Diet and feeding
Offer small live or accepted frozen prey and check each fish feeds.
