Appearance and identification

The head, body and fins are uniformly blackish to brown with a blue or turquoise sheen, lacking the yellow spots and margins of gold nugget plecos. A membrane extends behind the dorsal fin towards the adipose fin, and a keel lies above the pectoral base. Blue Panaque is a trade name.

Aquarium environment

It eats aquarium plants, so it is unsuitable for preserving delicate planting. Allow for feeding damage.

Diet and feeding

Feeds mainly on plant material and eats aquarium plants. Feed deliberately; wood is not a complete diet and incidental algae are insufficient.

Same-species behaviour

Adults are strongly territorial towards their own kind and other Baryancistrus.

Compatibility limits

Allow for adult territorial conflicts in the layout.
