Orange-spotted snakehead — Natural adult, sex unspecified; golden-orange flank patches and pelvic fins present; AI-generated illustration.

Orange-spotted snakehead

Channa aurantimaculata

Bold golden flank patches; allow for adult size and seasonal care

A robust elongated body combines irregular golden-orange flank patches with dark brown areas, a mottled head and banded pectoral fins. Juveniles have not yet developed the full adult colour pattern.

Adult length
Up to 36.2 cm
Natural habitat
Inhabits seasonally flooded monsoon forest, using burrows near tree stumps during dry periods and emerging when the forest floods.

Plan permanent space and a secure lid for a potentially large adult. Aquarium fish are reported to reach 50 cm, so do not judge by the size on sale.

Appearance and identification

From the upper Brahmaputra region of northeastern India. Unlike C. bleheri it has pelvic fins, and the orange pattern is on its robust body rather than a rainbow-patterned tail. The male mouthbroods; putting opposite sexes together does not make a pair.

Adult space

Provide sturdy cover, turning room, a secure lid and accessible air. Plan seasonal cooling, day length and body condition together.

Diet and feeding

Feed according to season and body condition. Breeding fish may be fasted during a cool period, but this does not suit every fish.

Same-species behaviour

Pairing is individual. Females can be dominant, so watch partner selection. A juvenile group is not a long-term arrangement.

Compatibility limits

Plan around predation, territorial behaviour and growth. Small fish and shrimp are at risk, and matching temperatures do not change that.

Aquarium environment

Allow for adult movement and shelter in the planting plan. Watch for plant damage; shrimp are not safe.
