Rainbow snakehead
Orange tail patches and a need for seasonal cooler conditions
The long body has blue reflections, a rounded tail with large orange-red patches and banded pectoral fins. Pelvic fins are absent.
- Adult length
- Up to 14.4 cm
- Natural habitat
- Inhabits seasonally flooded monsoon forest, sheltering in burrows near tree stumps during dry periods and emerging when water rises.
Seasonal cooling is part of its care. It may survive briefly in a heated shop tank but is not suited to constant tropical warmth.
Appearance and identification
From the Brahmaputra drainage of northeastern India. Compare the tail with C. andrao rather than relying on blue fins. It lays floating eggs and both parents guard the brood, so not all small snakeheads are mouthbrooders.
Adult space
Provide an escape-proof cover, humid air above the water and unobstructed surface access. Break sight lines with cover.
Diet and feeding
Insects, insect larvae and earthworms are suitable. Offer varied, suitably sized foods; feeder fish are not required.
Same-species behaviour
Relatively peaceful for a snakehead, but do not crowd a group. Watch pair formation and brood defence, and keep a way to separate fish.
Compatibility limits
Small fish and ornamental shrimp are at risk. A planted layout or matching temperature range does not remove predation and territorial risks.
Aquarium environment
Plants may provide cover, but seasonal care should decide the planting. Fragile plants can be uprooted by sudden movement.
