Grass carp
A long-bodied, large-scaled carp with no barbels and a short dorsal.
- Adult length
- Up to 150 cm
- Lifespan
- Up to 21 years
- Natural habitat
- Adults favour large, vegetated slow or still waters such as lakes, ponds and river backwaters; spawning occurs in strong river currents.
Can strip ornamental vegetation; it is not an algae tool for planted aquariums.
Appearance and identification
A broad blunt head, terminal mouth, dark scale margins and a short dorsal identify grass carp. Unlike common carp and goldfish, it has a short dorsal. Albino fish remain the same species. Size and feeding intensity call for a carefully planned large pond.
Same-species behaviour
Adult size and food demand shape the whole pond plan.
Space requirements
Plan broad swimming and turning space for large adults.
Diet and feeding
Offer appropriate pellets and plant foods; do not rely on residual algae.
Compatibility limits
Assess size, feeding competition and vegetation loss individually.
Aquarium environment
Aquatic plants, including duckweed, may be eaten; unsuitable for preserving delicate planted layouts.
