Erromyzon kalotaenia

Erromyzon kalotaenia

A row of low square flank blotches and pectorals ending before the pelvic origins

A relatively slender body carries about 9–12 brown squarish midlateral blotches, each around one-third of body depth, with gaps of similar width. A faint brown lateral stripe can connect them. The body is slightly reddish when fresh, with spotted dorsal and caudal fins and a dark caudal-base mark.

Adult length
Up to 4.8 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
Natural habitat
Inhabits shallow river-bed areas among boulders, cobbles and sand.

It jumps: use a tightly fitting cover and secure feeding openings and other escape gaps.

Appearance and identification

Its flank blotches generally do not continue across the back. E. compactus has bars crossing the dorsum, while E. sinensis usually has more irregular bars. Pectorals fall short of the pelvic origins, unlike the longer-reaching pectorals of Pseudogastromyzon.

Floor and movement space

A 70 cm tank of 55 L is a suggested size.

Aquarium environment

Keep feeding surfaces, suitable flow and aeration.

Diet and feeding

Give algae and other green foods combined with small frozen foods; it searches through bottom sand. Check actual intake instead of relying on leftover algae.

Same-species behaviour

A group is recommended, though it is not a typical schooling fish. Monitor each fish's access to food and refuges.

Compatibility limits

Avoid large or aggressive fishes. Check feeding, flow and oxygen needs individually.
