Blue gularis
Extended tail rays and red-brown bars; plan for size and pursuit.
The elongated male combines blue-green reflections with red-brown markings and stronger rear bars. Upper, lower and central tail rays extend.
- Adult length
- Up to 12 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 23–26 °C
- pH
- 6–8
- Hardness
- 5–20 dGH
- Natural habitat
- Inhabits temporary swamps, raffia-palm swamps and marshy reaches of slow brooks in coastal rainforest.
Not a tiny schooling fish. Check male rivalry, female harassment, swallowable companions and a tight lid.
Appearance and identification
Compare its barred rear flank with the spotted Gardner's killifish.
Same-species behaviour
Provide separation options.
Space requirements
Use a 90×30cm base. Plant and wood cover can break sightlines while keeping feeding accessible.
Diet and feeding
Provide live and frozen foods and check acceptance of dry food; being a predator does not replace regular feeding.
Compatibility limits
First exclude swallowable fish, then watch feeding competition and pursuit.
Aquarium environment
Plants provide cover and sightline breaks. Substrate spawning needs separate management.
