Gastromyzon ornaticauda
Sparse pale body marks and a blue-green tail centre edged red above and below
A dark body with sparse pale bars and a blue-green tail centre with reddish upper and lower margins. Its flattened head and enlarged paired fins suit life against stones.
- Adult length
- Up to 7 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 20–24 °C
- pH
- 6.5–7.5
- Natural habitat
- Native to waters of the Kuamut area in Malaysian Borneo.
Keep at 20–24°C, pH 6.5–7.5 and 4–12 dKH.
Appearance and identification
Compared with the finely barred G. zebrinus, it has sparser body markings and different tail colours.
Floor and movement space
Use at least 20 gallons.
Aquarium environment
Prioritise clean, oxygen-rich moving water and smooth grazing stones. Planting must leave these usable; it suits flowing water, not an ordinary still-water planted tank.
Diet and feeding
Offer sinking algae foods, vegetables and occasional animal foods. Check actual feeding; surface grazing does not remove the need to feed.
Same-species behaviour
Keep three or more. Provide separate feeding surfaces and watch competition.
Compatibility limits
Strong competitors may limit food access.
