Altifrons eartheater, natural-colour normal-fin adult, sex and locality unspecified, left-facing AI illustration

Altifrons eartheater

Geophagus altifrons

A tall forehead and fine blue-red pattern; the adult flank spot is tiny or absent.

Adult markings and origin matter; other colourful eartheaters and trade-labelled juveniles are not automatically altifrons.

Adult length
Up to 22.5 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
Water temperature
26–32 °C
Hardness
0–5 dGH
Natural habitat
Native to the Amazon basin in Brazil.

Large adult size, group space, soft sand and mature stable water are major requirements; this is not a cleaner fish.

Appearance and identification

The adult has a high forehead, low mouth and iridescent scale rows. Strong vertical bars and a large flank blotch are absent, unlike many similar eartheaters. Juveniles are difficult to identify.

Social behaviour and territory

Groups form hierarchies. Provide visual breaks and check that subordinate fish feed.

Compatibility limits

Avoid persistent feeding and bottom-territory competition.

Space requirements

Use a 180 × 60 cm or larger base for a long-term group of 5–8 fish.

Aquarium environment

Leave broad soft-sand areas and secure roots and décor; gravel or dense carpets cannot replace sifting space.

Diet and feeding

Offer fine complete foods and varied small aquatic fare, including plant ingredients. Adult size does not mean large food pieces.
