Rosa’s round ray

Heliotrygon rosai

Fine cream-white vermiculations cover a grey-tan round disc.

Many fine white to cream vermiculations lie over a light grey-brown disc. Seen dorsally the disc is nearly circular with a convex front.

Adult size
Up to 80 cm (disc width)
Natural habitat
Native to upper, middle and lower Amazon waters in Brazil.

The male holotype measures 57.5 cm across its disc, so this is not a small-tank fish. A reduced sting is no handling guarantee.

Appearance and identification

Compare it first with plain gomesi. Also known as coly ray.

Floor and movement space

Consider the broad disc and full thin tail together rather than disc length alone.

Aquarium environment

Leave open turning and tail routes.

Diet and feeding

Eats fish; a whole catfish was found in the holotype's abdomen.

Compatibility limits

Small fish should not be presumed safe. Disc harassment and adult space need separate assessment.
