Imperial flower loach

Leptobotia elongata

Broad blotches on a robust body, with exceptional adult space needs.

Adults are robust and elongated, with a broad head, irregular dark blotches or dorsal saddles on a grey-brown to yellow-brown body, and a forked tail. Individual patterns vary. A small, paler juvenile does not represent its lifetime appearance or space needs.

Adult length
Up to 50 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
Water temperature
15.5–21 °C
pH
6.5–7.5
Hardness
5–20 dGH
Natural habitat
Mainly inhabits clear, oxygen-rich flowing rivers over rocks and gravel, also occurring in larger, more turbid channels.

Use mature, clean, highly oxygenated flowing water at 15.5–21°C, pH 6.5–7.5 and GH 5–20 dGH. Long-term facilities are demanding.

Appearance and identification

Compared with L. taeniops, elongata has broad dark blotches or dorsal saddles rather than worm-like flank marbling. Royal clown is also applied to L. pellegrini, so growth expectations must not be shared.

Floor and movement space

Needs a base exceeding 360 × 90 cm, restricted to public installations or exceptionally large private facilities, and even that may be insufficient long-term.

Aquarium environment

Hardy plants attached to hardscape may fit a flowing-water facility with smooth stones, wood and adequately large refuges. An ordinary warm, quiet planted aquarium does not meet its space and oxygen needs. Avoid trapping holes and blocked bottom routes.

Diet and feeding

Offer suitable sinking foods and varied animal foods. Larger individuals can take appropriately cut fish, shrimp and shellfish. Observe each fish feeding rather than relying on scraps. Live feeder fish are not necessary.

Same-species behaviour

Start with three or four conspecifics; a social hierarchy forms. Consider large adult bodies, food access, space and refuges together.

Compatibility limits

A large bottom predator that may swallow small fish. An ordinary home planted aquarium is unsuitable. Plan adult-group accommodation before buying juveniles.
