Macropodus spechti
Pale brown to dark gray body, a forked tail and black spots on blue dorsal and caudal fin membranes.
A pale brown to dark gray body with darker scale edges, a forked tail, and black spots against blue fin membranes on the dorsal and caudal fins. The dorsal, anal and caudal fins lack the red pigment of M. erythropterus.
- Adult length
- Up to 8 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 20–30 °C
- pH
- 6–8
- Hardness
- 5–20 dGH
- Natural habitat
- Inhabits hill streams, river margins and backwaters, as well as small farmland streams and irrigation channels.
The front of the pelvic fins may still be reddish, so red coloration anywhere on the fish does not rule it out.
Social behaviour and territory
Can be kept in pairs or groups. Allow an 80 × 30 cm footprint for a pair; territorial behavior increases during nest guarding.
Diet and feeding
Small live and frozen foods are reliable choices; some individuals accept high-quality dried foods.
