Natural habitat: Recorded from sandy river shores, creeks and pools, often near vegetation over sand or mud, with some records from unvegetated sites.

The trade name Flag Cichlid often actually refers to M. insignis.

Social behaviour and territory

Usually mild, but more active in territorial defense during breeding. Give other fish room to retreat.

Omnivorous; combine prepared food with small animal foods and plant ingredients.
