A pale stripe contrasts with brown markings and a dark lower tail lobe. Night-time markings can change.
- Adult length
- Up to 5 cm
- Water temperature
- 22–28 °C
- pH
- 4.5–7.5
- Hardness
- 1–10 dGH
- Natural habitat
- Native to the central and upper Amazon basin.
Small, timid fish may lose food to forceful companions. Small size does not justify a tiny tank.

Compare the spotted rows with the one-lined pencilfish's main dark stripe. Both swim obliquely. The adipose fin varies in eques.
Same-species behaviour
Keep ten or more, with shelter, and watch weaker individuals.
Space requirements
A 60 × 30 cm base.
Diet and feeding
Offer fine dry foods and small frozen or live foods; check timid individuals feed.
Compatibility limits
Choose similarly sized, calm companions individually.
Aquarium environment
Use planted and floating shelter, gentle flow and swimming space.
