Appearance and identification
Natural-coloured males typically show a broad, regular dark stripe and blue eye shine. Rainbow emperor tetras often have reddish-brown ground colour and irregular blue-green reflections. Eye colour depends on sex and lighting. Mature males develop longer dorsal, anal and caudal fins, including an extended central tail ray. Females have greener irises.
Same-species behaviour
Keep at least six, preferably ten or more.
Space requirements
At least a 90 × 30 cm footprint. Plants and wood should interrupt sight lines while leaving a swimming lane.
Diet and feeding
Offer suitably sized dry food with live or frozen foods such as Daphnia and Artemia.
Compatibility limits
Avoid fish large enough to swallow them. Generally peaceful, but males compete with each other.
Aquarium environment
Provide several retreat areas among plants. Do not expect continuous tight schooling.
