Evers’ ricefish
Subtle silver outside breeding; females carry attached eggs until hatching.
A freshwater ricefish from Sulawesi. The non-nuptial adult male has a translucent silver-grey body and extended dorsal and anal rays. Dark breeding males are the same species.
- Adult length
- Up to 3.8 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 18–24 °C
- Natural habitat
- Inhabits a rainforest-surrounded karst pond with calm, very clear water and an inlet and outlet.
Mature males can defend territories; egg-carrying females need refuge.
Appearance and identification
It lacks the brilliant blue body and red fin pattern of O. woworae. Male dorsal and anal fins extend; female pelvic fins and abdomen relate to egg carrying.
Same-species behaviour
Keep eight or more. Males can chase; watch pursuit and hiding and allow separation.
Space requirements
A 75 × 30 cm base with swimming space, cover and visual barriers.
Diet and feeding
Offer appropriately small live, frozen and accepted prepared foods. Check that hiding or brooding fish actually feed.
Compatibility limits
Avoid aggressive or strongly competitive companions.
Aquarium environment
Vegetation and structure shelter brooding females. Females retain attached eggs until hatching rather than depositing them on plants, so ordinary spawning-mop methods do not apply.
