African butterflyfish
Winglike pectoral fins and long pelvic rays at the surface
Mottled brown sides and broad pectoral fins give a leaflike outline. The dangling rays belong to pelvic fins.
- Adult length
- Up to 11.9 cm
- Water temperature
- 25–28 °C
- pH
- 6.2–6.8
A jumper and surface feeder. Avoid fin nippers and surface competitors; small fish may be eaten.
Appearance and identification
This freshwater surface-dweller is not a marine butterflyfish. Winglike pectorals and long pelvic rays contrast with the arowana body plan; a side view cannot show its full pectoral span. Broad pectorals and long pelvic rays contrast with Asian arowana anatomy; these are not members of the same genus.
Adult space
Provide calm, accessible surface space and a secure cover; minimum footprint remains unknown.
Diet and feeding
Check that food is actually taken at the surface.
Same-species behaviour
Conspecific conflict may occur; retailer stocking counts are not a guarantee of safe group keeping.
Compatibility limits
Long pelvic rays may attract biting; bottom-dwelling alone does not establish safety.
Aquarium environment
Floating cover may help if feeding and breathing space remain accessible; this does not establish suitability for every planted aquarium.
