Red-bellied pacu
A small red-bellied juvenile becomes a giant grey pacu
Adults have a deep silver-grey body, short head and small mouth.
- Adult length
- Up to 88 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 23–28 °C
- pH
- 4.8–7.5
- Natural habitat
- Occurs in rivers and streams.
A lifelong giant-fish installation is needed; confinement does not safely stop growth.
Appearance and identification
Juveniles resemble red-bellied piranhas; crushing rather than cutting teeth are a useful distinction beyond colour.
Same-species behaviour
Juveniles shoal, but adults may not; give space and watch.
Space requirements
Keep substantial swimming space, secure heavy decor and protect equipment, with filtration suited to the waste load.
Diet and feeding
Combine suitable prepared food with plant foods. Small fish and crustaceans can also be eaten.
Compatibility limits
Small fish are vulnerable; constant activity can disturb timid companions.
Aquarium environment
Strong plant browsing makes delicate planted layouts unsuitable.
