Long-tailed river stingray
A pale whip extends far beyond the oval disc and distinct spiracle.
The disc is oval, with a longer anterior snout than nana. Brown skin bears irregular pale marks; a very long pale filamentous tail and projecting pelvic fins complete the outline.
- Adult size
- Up to 58 cm (disc width)
- Natural habitat
- Native to the Amazon basin from Ecuador to Belém, Brazil, including the Napo, Solimões, Amazonas and Pará rivers.
Do not leave out the long tail when planning space. Disc length or width exceeds 65cm. Avoid contact with the sting.
Appearance and identification
Larger rhomboid spiracles and an enlarged tail-thorn row contrast with nana's tiny spiracles and scattered small denticles. Nana's whip is usually darker, but tail colour varies.
Floor and movement space
Allow for the adult disc and complete whip, with clear turning routes.
Aquarium environment
Dense hardscape can restrict the whip's routes. Leave open floor and turning space.
Diet and feeding
Eats catfish and freshwater shrimp in the wild.
Compatibility limits
Small fish and shrimp may be eaten; armour does not make catfish safe companions. Watch for harassment of tail and disc.
Same-species behaviour
Keep separation options for chasing, feeding competition or injury.
