- Adult length
- Up to 7 cm
- Water temperature
- 23–27 °C
- pH
- 7–7.8
- Hardness
- 6–20 dGH
- Natural habitat
- Occupies a variety of flowing and standing waters, favouring dense algae and other aquatic vegetation.
Avoid prolonged temperatures below 18°C. Males reach 1.5 in and females 3 in.
Appearance and identification
Colour overlaps with P. mexicana and P. sphenops. Orange tail edges, spotting and male size alone cannot identify the species.
Same-species behaviour
Males can pressure females, so give ample cover. Larger groups and aquaria are favoured.
Diet and feeding
Feed suitable flakes and small pellets, including vegetable ingredients; do not rely on aquarium algae alone.
Compatibility limits
Similar mollies look alike. Brackish occurrences do not mean every captive stock requires salt.
Aquarium environment
Vegetation or other shelter gives females retreats.
