Sailfin molly
Mature males spread a spotted dorsal sail above an ordinary rounded tail.
Males have a long-based dorsal sail, longitudinal dark spot rows, muted iridescence and a deep caudal peduncle. Lyretail, balloon and hybrid trade forms exist.
- Adult length
- About 3.4 cm
- Water temperature
- 21–26 °C
- pH
- 7–8.5
- Hardness
- 15–35 dGH
- Natural habitat
- Inhabits still to slow creeks, ponds, lakes and vegetated backwaters, also common in tidal ditches and brackish canals.
Reaches 12.5 cm SL. Check previous water conditions (hard alkaline freshwater or brackish) rather than prescribe salt universally.
Appearance and identification
Compare the ordinary female sphenops for a shorter dorsal. Juveniles and commercial hybrids may still be confused with velifera.
Same-species behaviour
Males may compete and pursue females. Provide a 76×38 cm base, swimming space, refuge and separation options.
Diet and feeding
Include plant-based foods in a varied diet. Grazing does not replace feeding.
Compatibility limits
Larger fish may harass small companions, males may compete, and parents or other fish can eat fry. Hybridization with other mollies is a reason to keep provenance groups separately.
Aquarium environment
Soft leaves may be eaten. Select plants for actual hardness and salinity while retaining swimming space.
