- Natural habitat
- Recorded natively in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, with a preference for swimming near the surface in the wild.

Appearance and identification
P. salvatoris was historically treated as a variant of P. sphenops, so older accounts and trade names are confused. The male's multicoloured dorsal is a recognition cue.
Same-species behaviour
Harassment occurs in undersized groups; monitor pursuit and allow separation.
Diet and feeding
Accepts live, frozen and flake foods; baby brine shrimp for fry.
Compatibility limits
Assess each companion species for pursuit or predation risks.
Aquarium environment
Guppy grass and hiding places help fry survive.
