African leaffish
Short deep leaf-shaped body, large mouth and shifting mottled colour
This compressed predator extends its large mouth to capture prey. Mottled, pale and very dark states occur; contrasting juveniles are the same species.
- Adult length
- Up to 8 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 26–31 °C
- Lifespan
- 5–8 years
- pH
- 6–6.5
- Hardness
- 1–10 dGH
- Natural habitat
- Occurs in waters of African rainforest regions.
Quiet hovering does not make it safe with small fish or shrimp; confirm water stability and reliable feeding before purchase.
Appearance and identification
Unlike Monocirrhus polyacanthus, it lacks the conspicuous lower-lip stalk and has a shorter outline. It resembles South American Polycentrus.
Social behaviour and territory
Males build leaf-associated bubble nests and tend eggs; breeding does not guarantee peaceful groups.
Compatibility limits
Small fish and shrimp are prey.
Space requirements
Provide mature soft acidic water, gentle flow and shaded broad-leaf cover. A 60 × 38 cm footprint is reported. Keep at 26–31°C.
Aquarium environment
Broad leaves and floating plants offer cover and nesting surfaces. They cannot protect prey; keep feeding and leftovers observable.
Diet and feeding
Offer suitable live invertebrates. Live fish are not obligatory, but acceptance of dead foods varies. Check each fish feeds.
