Saddled bichir
Polypterus endlicherii
Broad flattened head with a projecting lower jaw; irregular dark saddle bands fade toward a paler belly.
- Adult length
- Up to 65.5 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 22–27 °C
- Lifespan
- Up to 20 years
- pH
- 6–8
- Hardness
- 5–25 dGH
- Natural habitat
- Inhabits rivers and marshes, occasionally entering brackish water, particularly around mangroves.
Appearance and identification
Both it and the armoured bichir may be barred; the protruding lower jaw is more informative.
Same-species behaviour
Often active in dim conditions; resting quietly does not make companions safe.
Space requirements
A full adult needs very substantial floor space (210 × 120 cm), a secure lid and access to atmospheric air.
Diet and feeding
Offer suitable animal foods; do not assume immediate pellet acceptance.
Compatibility limits
Keep broad turning and surfacing routes with stable soft substrate and cover; small companions risk predation.
