Pearl stingray
Simple juvenile ocelli develop into elaborate golden adult marbling.
P. jabuti is a distinct Tapajós species described in 2016. Adult marbling combines fine golden outlines with irregular spots; the trade name Pearl does not make it a motoro.
- Adult size
- Up to 60 cm (disc width)
- Water temperature
- 25–28.9 °C
- Lifespan
- 20 years or more
- pH
- 6.5–7.5
- Natural habitat
- Native to the Tapajós River basin in Brazil.
Needs a specialist large-water setup, such as a very large aquarium or indoor pool. The sting is hazardous and small aquatic animals may be prey.
Appearance and identification
Its pattern changes strongly with growth, from separate juvenile ocelli to elaborate adult marbling. Compare the adult mesh with albimaculata’s small pale spots. Albino forms and hybrid trade labels do not identify the species.
Floor and movement space
Allow room for adult turning and separation. Preferred 77–84°F (about 25–28.9°C) and pH 6.5–7.5.
Aquarium environment
Not suited to dense planted tanks. Leave open disc routes.
Diet and feeding
Takes animal foods, and frozen feeds are usually accepted. Watch each individual; a captive-bred label does not guarantee it accepts a particular food.
Compatibility limits
Small fish and shrimp are not safe companions. Consider adult size, floor routes, feeding competition and separation before any combination.
Same-species behaviour
Different species may hybridize.
