Tiger river stingray

Potamotrygon tigrina

Interwoven yellow-orange markings and conspicuous distal tail bands.

Dark brown to black carries interwoven yellow-orange vermiculations into the proximal tail, followed by roughly five or six dark distal bands with pale interspaces. The original description is from Peru’s Nanay basin.

The long tail and sting require full clearance. Typical adult size, water ranges and floor guidance remain unverified; values are not borrowed from related species. Trade availability does not establish small-tank suitability.

Appearance and identification

Closely related schroederi typically has rosette clusters instead. The 2011 description records international aquarium trade but very limited biological knowledge; trade presence is not evidence of established care.

Floor and movement space

No verifiable numerical species-specific care plan is adopted. Check space against actual disc width and complete tail length, not the displayed illustration length.

Aquarium environment

Attractive vermiculations do not establish planted-tank suitability. Leave smooth open routes for disc and long tail; plant disturbance remains unknown.

Diet and feeding

Verified long-term feeding records for this species are insufficient here. Animal-food experience in Potamotrygon is background only and does not guarantee food acceptance.

Compatibility limits

Species-specific compatibility is insufficiently documented. Genus-context predation and disc-harassment cautions remain relevant; intricate markings do not imply peaceful behaviour.

Same-species behaviour

Minimum group size and long-term social relationships remain unknown. Retain separation options; illustrated groups are not verified schooling.
