Appearance and identification

Mature males have longer fins and an orange lower head; females are less colourful. The labyrinth organ permits air breathing; preserve surface access. P. cupanus lacks the two dark stripes and has a less extended male tail.

Social behaviour and territory

Pairs or groups need retreats. Males commonly expel females after spawning.

Compatibility limits

Timid: avoid vigorous feeders and similarly shaped companions.

Space requirements

Allow a minimum 60 × 30 cm base. Provide caves and shade.

Aquarium environment

Plants and shelter can create shaded retreats; preserve surface access.

Diet and feeding

Offer tiny live or frozen foods; pecking dry food does not mean adequate intake.
