Appearance and identification

Mature males usually have longer fins and stronger colour, but the sexes can look similar. Both sexes can vocalise; sound alone cannot identify a male.

Social behaviour and territory

Plan for a pair or small group with very quiet companions. Large or vigorous fish may outcompete them, and small shrimp can be prey.

Compatibility limits

Avoid large, boisterous or fast-feeding companions. Small shrimp may be eaten; during breeding, watch pursuit around the nest and provide refuges.

Space requirements

Allow a 45 × 30 cm base for a pair or small group. Provide cover and monitor pursuit and feeding.

Aquarium environment

Keep a secure lid and an air space above the water: this fish can jump and uses its labyrinth organ to breathe air. Leave routes to the surface between floating plants.

Diet and feeding

Use tiny suitable foods, including daphnia, brine shrimp or small bloodworm. Check that active companions do not take all the food.
