Appearance and identification

The similar A. albomaculatus may share its trade names; spot counts alone do not separate them.

Floor and movement space

Provide shaded shelters; it spends much of the day hidden.

Aquarium environment

Plants can add shade, but keep shelters and feeding areas accessible for cleaning.

Diet and feeding

Offer sinking foods near its shelter at dusk, with suitable frozen foods for variety.

Same-species behaviour

Provide shaded shelters and check that it eats after dark. Spending much of the day hidden does not reduce its care needs.

Compatibility limits

It may eat very small fish or fry. Pectoral spines can snag in mesh, so use a container for transfer.
