Powder blue cichlid
Powder blue with dark fin edges; males and females look similar.
Both sexes can be powder blue.
- Adult length
- Up to 11.5 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 24–28 °C
- Lifespan
- 5–8 years
- pH
- 7.6–8.8
- Hardness
- 10–25 dGH
- Natural habitat
- Inhabits shallow sandy areas, with territorial males staying close to rocks.
Relatively less aggressive for a mbuna, but it still chases territorially; not a choice for a small-fish community.
Appearance and identification
A pale blue body with darker fin margins. Colour, subtle fin extensions and egg spots do not reliably show sex. Contrast with the dark, pale-striped adult male auratus; blue colour alone does not identify every similar Malawi cichlid.
Social behaviour and territory
Multiple males need more space. Breed with one male to at least three females.
Compatibility limits
Assess territories, size and diet individually.
Space requirements
Use a 90 × 45 cm base and 38 cm height.
Aquarium environment
Secure rockwork, caves, sand and open routes. Planting must preserve escape space.
Diet and feeding
Use complete foods rich in plant ingredients with varied aquatic fare. Grazing does not replace feeding; avoid red-meat substitutes.
