Black tiger dario — AI-generated side-profile illustration

Black tiger dario

Dario tigris

Pale body, orange-red bars and small head-and-nape spots

Displaying males show straight orange-red bars on a pale body, darker anterior bars and small head-and-nape spots. Females and frightened fish differ.

Adult length
Up to 3.5 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
Water temperature
20–24 °C
pH
7–9
Hardness
1–5 dGH
Natural habitat
Recorded from mountain streams in Kachin State, northern Myanmar, with the type locality south of Mogaung in the Ayeyarwaddy basin.

Batches are sometimes mixed with D. hysginon, and fright colours make identification harder. Small size does not remove competition or territorial demands.

Appearance and identification

Formerly treated as a colour form of D. hysginon (Black Tiger), but a separate species, described as Dario tigris in 2022. Its pale and red bars and head spots differ from male D. dario's red-blue pattern.

Social behaviour and territory

Watch male territories and separate persistent pursuit.

Compatibility limits

Avoid large or forceful feeding competitors.

Space requirements

Use 45 × 30 cm for a pair or one male with females. Plants and wood break sight lines.

Aquarium environment

Plants provide cover, but keep feeding observable. Bars do not mean open-water schooling.

Diet and feeding

Offer tiny live or frozen foods at several points and check they are eaten.
