Appearance and identification

Look at the shoulder and tail base together: it has one humeral blotch, without a distinct caudal-peduncle blotch or sharply defined dark lateral stripe. Colour changes with condition and lighting. Blue colour alone does not make it a blue emperor or blue tetra.

Same-species behaviour

Keep at least six.

Space requirements

Allow 60 L or more for a group, with planting, shade and swimming space.

Diet and feeding

Offer appropriately sized flakes or microgranules with small frozen and live foods. Observe whether each fish can feed successfully.

Compatibility limits

Choose similarly sized peaceful companions, and watch chasing and feeding competition.

Aquarium environment

Use plants for edge cover and local shade while leaving swimming space.
